June 1 marks the beginning of the Atlantic hurricane season. Hurricanes, also called tropical cyclones and typhoons, happen all over the world. This dataset shows the path of all tropical cyclones from 1950 through 2005. When mapped like this, definite patterns in cyclone paths are clear to see. For example, you can see that cyclones typically start near the equator and move toward the poles and they don't cross the equator.
